This sounds so grim. Apart from not being allowed to leave the state (on pain of 14 days quarantine) or the country (without special, hard to get, permission), in Queensland we are almost back to normal (only 6 active cases), and most retail businesses seem to have survived so far. But the national government seems set to screw things up, returning to rightwing business as usual, withdrawing support while cutting taxes for the rich.

Grim but poetic! Lovely writing, Eric! (Here in Tennessee, where I've been temporarily living since the pandemic started, I've been wrestling with the temptation to go into full-on prepper/survivalist mode in advance of the U.S. election ...)
