It's a crime this paper hasn't been published. It should be in Isis, surely?

Philosophy would do better in preparing the next generation if there was more co-authoring and active mentoring.

Thank you for your kind words, Alistair. For the record: the paper was accepted by Archive for the History of Exact Sciences back in the mid 1990s. That it did not appear in its pages (yet!) is entirely due to the authors.
